Aromas of tart cherry, cranberry & red raspberry with notes of savory herbs, sandalwood & chalky earth.
Limited oak aging adds leather, smoke & baking spices.
Lower in alcohol, tart with noticeable acidity & moderate tannins.
Chianti labeled wines from Tuscany Italy (even some areas slightly outside) are often a blend of Sangiovese (75%) with other local grapes e.g. Caniolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. (White grapes were once allow but no longer.) Also has low alcohol requirement of 11.50% and no real barrel aging requirements
Labelled Chianti Classico when from a restricted region, aged 18 months longer & governed by a huge number of rules which yield more refined wines.
Labelled Chianti Classico Riserva when aged at least two years in the oak & at least three months in the bottle with at least 12.5% abv & typically Earthy Sangio style.
