Flavors of tart red fruit, sharp (even bitter) herbs & sandalwood, with chalky minerality with high acidity.
Limited oak aging adds some of leather, smoke, toast & baking spices.
Chianti Classico (Normale) wines are a red-only blend (min. 80% Sangiovese), from within a restricted geographic "Classico" zone (a restricted area between Florence and Siena) displaying dark fruit qualities, with a minimum abv of 12%. It has a 12 month barrel aging requirement.
Chianti Classico Riserva is a Classico usually displaying even darker fruit qualities sometimes even with Cabernet added and has a higher abv requirement of 12.5% and has a 24 month barrel aging requirement.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a Reserva considered by the producer to be their best quality wine. It has a higher abv requirement of 13.0%, is made exclusively from estate-grown fruit and must be aged for at least 30 months before release.
